Sponsor a Guardian – Together we change lives

Not every Maremma who comes into our care can be rehomed. Some live with medical conditions, past trauma, or special needs that mean they will remain safely with us at WCMR for life.

Others are in long-term rehabilitation, learning to rebuild trust and reconnect with their natural guardian instincts at their own pace.

At West Coast Maremma and Livestock Guardian Rescue, we believe every dog and every animal in our care deserves compassion, comfort, and purpose. Sponsorship helps us provide that every single day.

The following Dogs are available for Sponsorship.

Clara

Learn more

Clara is a 7-year-old Sarplaninac (Serbian Livestock Guardian Dog) who has been in our care for 16 months. During that time, she has made significant progress. True to her breed, Clara is selective with both people and dogs by nature and has a history of biting people and attacking dogs. With experienced guidance and a clear understanding of her temperament, she is no longer a threat to visitors once properly introduced, is mostly tolerant of other dogs, and can be settled readily. Clara adores children and newborn animals, with whom she is exceptionally gentle and trustworthy. She has permanent sanctuary, as she requires an experienced handler and ongoing management of health conditions.

Shay

Learn more

Shay has been with us for 8 years and was given permanent sanctuary after experiencing five failed homes by the time he was just 18 months old. The instability in his early life contributed to some behavioural challenges, but with a secure home, consistent guidance, and an understanding of his guardian traits, Shay has truly flourished. He is wonderful in the car, enjoys outings, and has even been used as a therapy dog. Shay is deeply loved by everyone who meets him.

Ghost

Learn more

Ghost was surrendered at 6 years old following the unexpected passing of his owner, when the family felt unable to manage him. He shut down completely for many weeks as he grieved, which was heartbreaking to witness. Ghost still struggles with anxiety and can bark excessively, but this is managed well by keeping him close and maintaining a calm routine. His reactivity to grooming and nail clipping has improved considerably as trust has grown through regular sessions. Now 10 years old, Ghost has permanent sanctuary, as rehoming was never a suitable option for a dog with such a sensitive nature and special needs.

Otis

Learn more

Otis is a 3.5-year-old Maremma x Labrador mix who was booked for euthanasia due to unprovoked aggression and serious bites to people when another rescue asked if we could take him. We believed he was a confused young dog who needed guidance, as he was very gentle and sweet with his young owners. In the past 14 months, Otis has made wonderful progress. With trust in consistent guidance, he is now calm and affectionate with people once properly introduced and quickly becomes a favourite. He is excellent with our farm animals and chickens and absolutely adores my grandson. Otis has long-term sanctuary because of his special handling needs.

Rupert

Learn more

Rupert was 15 months old when he was surrendered 5 years ago for aggression. At that time, he was highly reactive to unfamiliar people and animals, although he remained gentle with those he knew and trusted. With guidance—and invaluable help from our Maremma patriarch, who would “shadow” him and block any reactivity—Rupert has made wonderful progress. He still needs an experienced home, and for that reason he has become a much-loved permanent member of our farm family.

Korn

Learn more

Korn is a beautiful 7-year-old Maremma x male who was severely neglected and seized by the RSPCA in early 2025 along with his brother. He was extremely emaciated, weighing only 12kg, and was suffering from serious health issues that required ongoing treatment and care. Korn was a favourite with staff and much loved by his foster carer. We were asked to assist with rehoming him, but because he needs ongoing healthcare, we have given him permanent sanctuary. Despite everything he has endured, Korn is joyful and sweet-natured, and we are so happy to have him as part of our farm family.

Koda

Learn more

Koda was just 6 months old and facing euthanasia for “aggression” in South Australia. At that age, he was simply a puppy in need of guidance. The family was offered mentoring but declined, and we had only two days to arrange a flight to Perth. Since then, Koda has matured into a lovely boy and is a dependable guardian for our goats and sheep. He has strong guardian traits which, if not understood and guided appropriately, can be expressed in negative ways. For that reason, Koda has been given permanent sanctuary.

Prima

Learn more

Prima is our 13-year-old matriarch and has been with us for 4.5 years. Before coming into care, she had been seriously neglected and arrived with poor kidney function and partial cruciate ruptures that fully ruptured within two weeks. Given her age and kidney issues, veterinarians advised euthanasia because surgery was not an option, but Prima deserved the chance to fight. With careful conservative rehabilitation, she returned to full health and mobility. She is a beautiful, sassy girl and deeply loved by all of us.
